Port sector moves more than 87.2 million tons in January

The port sector handled 87.2 million tons in January this year. The data are from ANTAQ's Waterway Statistics.




The drop of 2.76% compared to the same period in 2022 was driven by the decrease in the movement of iron ore, which moved 23 million tons (decrease of 11% compared to January last year).


The highlight in goods is corn, which moved 6.2 million tons, showing a growth of 127.93% when compared to January 2022. Sugar and Wheat also had good movement rates with 1.6 million tons tons (+32.17%) and 1.2 million tons (up 20.0%), respectively.


Inland shipping (4.9 million tons moved) was the highlight of the month with growth of 10.15% compared to 2022. A highlight of inland movement was containerized cargo (increase of 40.22% ). There was also an increase in the amount of Corn moved in indoor facilities (+185.51%).


Long-haul shipping handled 58.5 million tons in January (down 3.55%). Cabotage handled 23.7 million tons (-2.42%). Maritime and port support also recorded a decrease of 65.25% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching a movement of 98 thousand tons. However, the numbers are imprecise due to the lack of data from the port of Areia Branca, which has not yet sent the data to the System.


Ports and terminals


Despite the decrease in total movement, there was growth in the total movement of the country's organized ports. Public ports handled 29.2 million tons, which represents a growth of 4.31% compared to the same period of the previous year.


The main positive highlights for this year were the movements of the Port of São Francisco do Sul with 1.3 million tons handled, demonstrating a growth of 52.22% compared to 2022.
