Event held in Brasília, attended by the main players in the sector and with the support of the National Transport Confederation
Launched on the morning of this Tuesday, 28th, in Brasília, the Guide to Best Port Sustainability Practices: The ESG Strategy, is the result of the partnership between the LabPortos Research Group of the Federal University of Maranhão, the Association of Port Terminals Private Companies (ATP) and the Brazilian Association of Port and Waterway Entities (ABEPH).
In addition to the successful institutional partnership, the collaborative construction of the Guide relied on the expertise of representatives from the Modal Consult team. Modal's founding partners, Andressa Guimarães, Adriano Barbosa and Fernando Fialho and lawyers Letícia Lucena and Marcella Monteiro contributed to the formulation of part of the Guide's content.
Conceptually, the Guide presents itself as a compass for understanding and practicing sustainability in the port sector. All material was constructed from a survey of dedicated literature, analysis of good practices in environmental, social and governance actions, data collection from public information, technical visits to port organizations, interviews and national and international benchmarking.
In general terms, the work consists of a brief conceptualization and analysis of the concept of sustainability in the direction of ESG strategies, the typology of best practices in the environmental, social and governance dimensions of policies, plans, programs, projects, processes and partners. Likewise, the Guide identifies relevant audiences (stakeholders). In other words, for whom and how ESG strategies are developed in their material themes, from the perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the UN, in the 2030 Agenda, and the unrestricted compliance with legislation and consideration of available voluntary certification requirements in the market.
The rich document can be defined as a mapping of the main national regulations on environmental, social and governance issues and on the focus of port-city relations. The Guide, in fact, is a bold proposal on what a journey towards port sustainability is, and should be, comprising actions for its internal (management body and employees) and external audiences, suppliers, customers, regulatory entities, shareholders, in order to guide and seek a harmonious and sustainable relationship between ports and their cities.
